The Ferrari F12 is featured in DriveClub. We were trying to wait until we smashed a window to see if it changes but couldn’t find an impact hard enough.

Many games pump full engine sound through the speakers, but with a helmet on and the windows up, it’s not really accurate (though it is entertaining). Because you’re in the car, the exhaust noise is muffled by the windows. The second thing we noticed, after the graphics, was the sound - actually, the lack of sound. Thunder vibrates the controller as clouds roll in and wind speed affects the waves of the Scottish lakes.

Southern Hemisphere races will feature the Southern Cross in Norway, Scotland and Canada, drivers can see the Northern Lights at night. “DriveClub” features real weather patterns, wind speed and stars in the sky, all brought to you with help from NASA.

It made it seriously hard to see, possibly harder than in real life. That puts the sun right at eye level, casting dashboard reflections onto the windshield. Moment came during the third race, when we raced from daylight into dusk. The arm and the head movements all mimicked what it feels like to get into a car, as did the spectacularly rendered interiors. Our first jaw-drop moment happened during the second race, when our avatar got into a new car, showing us a first-person view. If we’re talking graphics, though, it is a full simulation. We’d say “DriveClub” does a good job of straddling the line between full simulation and wacky arcade. There were no black flags, but there were penalties for collisions during passing maneuvers and for corner cutting. Like every racing game, we tended to late-brake into corners on the inside, dive-bombing and bumping other competitors off the line with the outside of our Benz. The Benz isn’t hard to control, and we found ourselves in the mix after just one lap, probably thanks to the GLA45’s all-wheel-drive setup. That’s good, because we were rookies in every sense: rookies with the system, with the game and with the hand controller, considering our usual use of a Logitech race wheel. “DriveClub” opens behind the seat of a Mercedes GLA45 AMG, which offers a mix of speed and controllability, great for a first-time player. Granted, we picked up a new PS4 for the review, and we’re riding a little high on our new purchase. What this game needs is a pre-race-weekend serene walk around the track to enjoy the flora and the fauna. It’s too bad you have to drive so fast in PlayStation 4’s “DriveClub” racing game, out today, because the scenery is so damn gorgeous.
